History of Slovenia

The territory of Slovenia has been a part of many different states and countries over the course of its existence. It was part of the Roman Empire and part of the Holy Roman Empire. The Habsburgs took it over in the 1700s and early 1800s. It formed the state of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs in 1918 but this was unrecognized by the rest of Europe. It was annexed by Germany in WWII and then became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This country broke up in 1991, and the country created its own sovereignty at that time. It is today a part of NATO, the European Union, and Eurozone, and is considered the richest Slavic nation.
