Serbia is a small country located in Southeastern Europe. Its flag consist of three horizontal stripes of red, blue and white. In the center of the flag is the country’s emblem. The emblem is red yellow and white. It consists of a double eagle, draperies, and two crowns, one on top of the other.

Serbia population

The population of Serbia is about 7.3 million people, not including Kosovo. The largest ethnic group is the Serbs, which represent 83 percent of the country. Of minorities, there are many, including the Hungarians, the Germans, the Bosniaks, Albanians, Bulgarians, Croats and Romans. The country enjoys the largest number of refugees in all of Europe. Most come from Croatia and Kosovo. Many people have emigrated from Serbia since it gained its independence. Many were well educated. The largest city by far is Belgrade, followed by NoviSad. Religion is diverse in Serbia including 84 percent who practice Orthodox Christianity, followed by 6 percent who practice Roman Catholicism. Three percent practice Islam. Kosovo is 90 percent Muslim.  

 

History of Serbia

The Serbs arrived in the Balkan states in the 600s CE and formed a number of medieval states. This grew to become the Serbian Empire in the 1300s. It was conquered by the Ottomans in the 1500s and occasionally by the Habsburgs around the early 1800s. The Serbian Revolution took place in the 1800s and the state of Serbia was reestablished. It was a monarchy. It united with Voivodina in 1918. It was part of Yugoslavia after WWI and remained that way until 2006, the time of Serbian’s independence. It is considered a neutral country.

Serbia treats guests and tourists similarly to the rest of Europe. Usually, an introduction to new acquaintances is followed by a handshake with eye contact and a smile. It is customary to shake hands when a person leaves or enters. If there is a woman among the group, shake her hand first before the men. In business or formal situations, formal dressing is required. Men and women wear suits and attempt to appear fashionable but not too flashy. First names are reserved for Serbians who have a close relationship. In general, address them with their appropriate titles and the surname.
