History of Romania

The Kingdom of Romania was first developed by the merging of Moldavia and Wallachia. This happened in 1859. It was under the Ottoman Empire until 1877, when it became independent. Several other countries merged with the Kingdom after WWI. These included Transylvania, Bessarabia and Bukovina. Most of its territories fell under Soviet Rule and the entire country became Soviet after WWII. It became a part of the Warsaw Pact. Romania became a democracy after the fall of communism in 1989. Romania officially became a member of the European Union in 2007. It joined NATO in 2004. It is currently a unitary semi-presidential democratic republic.
