Montenegro is a tiny country located in Southeastern Europe. Its flag is red with its emblem/coat of arms in gold in the middle. The coat of arms consists of a double-headed eagle with a banner of a lion in the middle and a crown on top of it. There is Christian symbolism as well in the eagles’ talons.
There are greater than 620,000 residents of Montenegro. The main population group is Montenegrins; however, there are a number of Serbian, Bosniak, Muslim, Albanian and Croat minorities. Ethnically, the Montenegrins are considered Serbian by some people. Most people speak the Ivekavian dialect of Serbian; however Montenegrin is considered the state language. Many people speak Serbian, Albanian, Bosnian and Croatian languages. Most can understand and speak with one another as the languages are similar (except Albanian). Most of the inhabitants of Montenegro are Orthodox Christians and follow the Serbian Orthodox Church or the Montenegrin Orthodox Church. Church is separate from state and there are a number of Sunni Muslims living in Montenegro. A few people are Roman Catholic.
It was inhabited since ancient times and were colonized by the Illyrians, the Romans and the Slavs. It became an independent state in 1042 after being under Byzantine rule. It became a kingdom before being conquered by the Serbians. It fell to the Ottomans in the 1400s but remained semi-independent until the Great Turkish War in the 1600s. The only king of Montenegro was King Nickolas I. It became independent in 1878 and was made a kingdom in 1910. It sided with Serbia in WWI and was defeated by Austria-Hungary. It merged with Serbia after the war until the great Christmas Rebellion. It became part of Yugoslavia in 1922 but was taken over by Italy in WWII and eventually by the Germans. It went back to Communist Yugoslavia after WWII. When Socialist Yugoslavia disbanded in 1992, Montenegro became aligned with Serbia and the rest of Yugoslavia. It declared its independence in 2006.

Normally, the people of Montenegro have a staple diet of meat, fruits and vegetables, bread and dairy. Lunch is considered the main meal for the day and is eaten around three in the afternoon. The light supper is usually eaten at 8pm. However, on special occasions like Christmas, food normally consists of roasted meat, cesnica (kind of bread), all kinds of pastries and zito (wheat dish). They are very fond of pepper and usually cook their dishes with it. Dessert is usually pita and is served with shots of coffee placed in small cups. They have dyed shells to decorate the feast.
