Lithuania is a Northeastern Baltic State in Europe and is also called the Republic of Lithuania. It has a flag consisting of horizontal stripes of yellow, followed by green, followed on the bottom with red. Its coat of arms is red, yellow, white and blue and consists of a crusader with a sword on a horse.

Lithuania population

The population of Lithuania is greater than 3.3 million people. A total of 84 percent are ethnic Lithuanians who speak the official language of the country, which is Lithuanian. There are many minority people, including the Polish, Russians and Belarusians. Besides Lithuanian, people speak Polish and Russian. Only about 16 percent of the populace can speak English. The biggest city by population is Vilnius, followed by Kaunas. The life expectancy is only about 66 for men and 78 for women. The population is slowly growing. It has the highest suicide rate in the entire world. It also has the highest homicide rate in Europe. Almost 80 percent of Lithuanians are Roman Catholic.  

 

History of Lithuania

At one point in the 14th century, the country of Lithuania was the largest in all of Europe and it had many territories. Poland and Lithuania united in 1569 to form the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. It lasted for 200 years. The Russians took over Lithuania in the late 1700s. After WWI, Lithuania declared independence in 1818 but in WWII, it was occupied by the USSR and later by Nazi Germany. It was reoccupied by the Soviet Union after WWII but became the first of the countries to reestablish its independence from the former USSR in 1990.
