Greece is a country located in Southeastern Europe. It is also known as Hellas or the Hellenic Republic. Its flag is white with blue detailing. The upper right quadrant is white with a blue cross in it. Its other quadrant consists of multiple blue and white stripes. Its emblem contains a blue ring of leaves. In the center is a blue square with a large white cross in the middle of it, stretching from end to end and top to bottom.
The population of Greece is about 11 million people. The population is steadily declining due to an increase in death over birth rate. Marriage rates have fallen and divorce rates have increased. Greece is considered a primarily urban nation with two-thirds of the populace living in urban areas. The biggest cities are Athens and Thessaloniki. More than 97 percent of Greek citizens are of the Orthodox Christian faith but all faiths are considered acceptable by the government. Sixteen percent of Greeks consider themselves very religious, which is the highest number in all of Europe.
Greece was inhabited since prehistoric times. In fact, it is considered the cradle of Western Civilization. Western philosophy was born in ancient Greek times, and democracy was established in Greece. The first civilization was called the Cycladic civilization, in which Athens was the center. Romans ruled over the Greeks in 146 BCE. This then created the Byzantine Empire in 330 CE. The Greeks played a great role in the Renaissance period. The Ottomans took over until 1829, when the Greek War of Independence was completed. Greece won more territory in the Balkan Wars and, after WWI, they fought with the Turkish people. Turkey and Greece exchanged a great many of their populations after this war. It was a dictatorship in 1940 but fell to the Germans in the Battle of Greece. After WWII, there was a civil war in Greece between communists and non-communists. Eventually, Greece became a democracy in 1975. Greece joined NATO in 1980.
