Belgium population

Multiple languages are spoken in Belgium, including French, Dutch and German. As far back as the 19th century, the French were considered the upper class and the Dutch-speaking people were considered of the lower class. There are specific areas of Belgium that only speak Dutch, German or French and these communities are relatively autonomous from one another. There are constitutional language areas that decide what language the region will speak as its official language. Even so, they have a single parliament and the government governs those who speak any of the three languages.

History of Belgium

Belgium was inhabited by tribes of Germanic and Celtic people until 100 BCE, when it was invaded by the Roman army. It was considered a low country under the realm of the Merovingian kings until the 8th Century CE. In the 1500-1600s and later, it came under the rule of the Austrian Habsburgs and sometimes the Spanish kings. Austrian rule ended after the French Revolutionary Wars in the 1700s. It became part of the First French Empire in 1815. An independent Belgium was created in 1830 and it was primarily French-speaking. It took over the ruling of Congo in 1908 and called it the Belgian Congo. Germans invaded Belgium in 1914 and in 1940 as part of the world wars. It was liberated as a free country again in 1944.
